Story
The hyena mask, or "suruku," symbolizes a teacher. It is used in initiation rites marking the transition of young people from Bamana society to adulthood. The novices undergo ritual death followed by resurrection. In the preceding years, they were instructed in classes (Lion, Hyena, and Monkey) within the bush camp in subjects such as faith, medicine, sexuality, life cycles, and hunting. The hyena, along with the monkey and lion, is associated with the secret society "Kore." The mask has been fitted with a new suspension system. The supporting leg is not included.
